What is Flocking?

in Apr 19, 2023

What's going on everybody? I hope this finds all of you in the midst of a bright and enjoyable Spring season. Here at State Of Flux, we are fresh off of releasing our Spring offering - Embrace Change Collection. For this collection, we divided the products into two drops. The first drop was spearheaded by all-over print button-ups with matching shorts, bright colored tees, and strong graphics. We supplemented this with our second drop, chock full of accessories to help elevate any fit you could put together.

With this collection, we went with a mixture of mediums for production. We mixed in screen-printing (both flat and puff) with heat transfer and introduced the process of flocking to a bulk of the product offerings. But, what is flocking? Flocking is a type of heat transfer vinyl (HTV), but it differs from regular heat transfer vinyl because the design/image is cut with a machine, rather than printed directly on to the transfer paper.

Flocking is a multi-step production process that starts once the design is cut on the flocking vinyl using a cutting machine. Once the design is cut, it needs to be weeded of the negative space, positioned on the product, and then heat pressed on to the fabric for a lasting impression. Another aspect of flocking that I personally really like is the finishing. Unlike normal vinyl, flocking leaves a raised impression to create depth and texture as well as a felt-like softness to the touch.

Check out these detail shots highlighting the flocking of the Embrace Change Collection.

The Dolores tee in mauve: A fan favorite, this tee features bright stacked flocking.

The Change Hoodie in mustard: This hoodie features stacked flocking for even more texture.

The Transformation Hoodie in white: This hoodie features a mix of heat press transfer with flocking vinyl.

Although the pictures are on point, it just doesn't serve the product justice! So make sure if you are local, you come by the shop to see the flocking in person and feel the difference between other application processes. As for our loyal online shoppers, make sure you throw one of the above products in your shopping cart the next time you visit the site... as long as supplies last!

As always, the support is much appreciated. Much love!
